Established in 1774 and located just 40 miles outside of Washington, DC, this Virginia treasure for tying the knot boasts a rich history, one that is strikingly evident as soon as you step foot on the property. Sylvanside is absolutely perfect for couples looking to give their guests a true destination experience without the stress that can - and does - often come with a destination affair. Couples can rent the 24-acre private property for an entire weekend of epic merriment with the ones they love most, butttt even one day+night is amazing here, given the makings of a pretty spectacular progressive wedding on its grounds. A little bit of back story on the barn
The owners purchased the venue to preserve the history and awe-inspiring rural landscape that comes with it. The estate was lovingly restored to its original grandeur, with upgrades to enhance the experience for couples and their guests. And it definitely reminds us of a small village in the European countryside. Hard to imagine anyone not loving that look, right?
Well, a picturesque place is always cause for kvelling when you’re scouting venues for your vows, but the Sylvanside property promises way more than beautiful backdrops to haunt every photographer’s dreams for eternity ((in the best way possible)). The SF staff prides themselves on making every soon-to-be-wed’s planning process easy with regular communication, a curated list of top-notch vendors, and day-of support that goes above and beyond to guarantee couples are witnessing every wish and whim of their wedding vision unfold. Yes, that means way more than covet-worthy farm tables and cross-back dining chairs: like having an entire library of items at your disposal - from vintage furniture to custom draping and upscale decor (the golden mirrors might just be our favorites).
Now back to that progressive wedding notion…
The thing about destination weddings - and even some more dynamic domestic weddings - that gets people so excited is the element of “build” and progression. Guests aren’t just treated to a flat, one and done kind of ceremony and reception experience; rather, they float from one part of the wedding to another, always feeling a sort of surprise and delight at each turn.
That’s what it’s like at a Sylvanside wedding, seriously, one endlessly-inspiring estate venue - so many vibes. You might have your ceremony overlooking the pond or under blooming trees in the orchard ((either locale is 🙌, but we can’t help but die over intimate vows under the trees)). Next, you can invite your guests for cocktails under the cathedral ceiling of the Stone Barn, while you take photos with the handsome pair of Clydesdales or play lawn games as the sun sets. Later, guests can be ushered to the rustic Poplar Barn for a seated evening reception that can accommodate up to 400 friends and family members - it’s that big, really. At over 200 feet long, with post and beam construction and artfully-hung hoop lighting, the Poplar Barn is absolutely enchanting. Finally, you may decide to close out the evening at the fire pit (outfitted with the comfy and coziest Adirondack chairs), overlooking the rolling hills and lighting up some marshmallows for epic end-of-the-night s’mores with the squad.

Once the festivities have ended for the night, newlyweds can head back to cuddle in the romantic on-site Hunt Box, tastefully decorated with equestrian touches - we said horse around, didn’t we 😉? Members of the wedding party, close friends, and family can stay nearby in the Cottage, catch a wink or two, and roll out of bed the next morning for a farewell brunch to end all brunches.
