This year Elbeth Gillis has really outdone herself. In a bold move, this Cape Town-based designer
has created two capsule collections for 2017. While these two collections are remarkably
different in their approach – one is comprised of elegant gowns while the other offers mix-and-
match separates – they are nevertheless unified by Elbeth’s signature sophistication and
incredible attention to detail.
Luxury is a delicious 8-gown collection, worth poring over and savoring. Like her previous collection, Opulence, this collection is sensual – though this year with an emphasis on backs and shoulders and that wonderful line from nape to waist. Backs plunge to the hips in a variety of ways, from keyhole openings to illusion backs and lace tattoos. Necklines also reveal more décolletage, but with a sophistication that is quite becoming. Silhouettes include everything one could ask for, from a satin ball gown to flowy skirts to figure-fitting gentle mermaids.
Elbeth introduced separates in her Opulence collection, but this year, her separates will strike a chord with minimalist brides. Far simpler, this collection draws upon elements of the 1950s where lines were both strong and fluid. It’s the perfect choice for the bride who doesn’t want the seductiveness and mystique of Luxury, and who wants to play with finding her perfect look. Brides can select from one of four skirts: a flowy silk chiffon skirt, a pleated satin skirt with a very appealing asymmetrical hemline, a silk ball gown skirt and a sassy-chic knee-length ostrich feather skirt. Match your skirt with a bodice of your choice, and then top it with a lace overlay available in a variety of styles.
