Okay, so can we get an honest show of hands from anyone who has ever heard “Single Ladies” at a wedding and wanted to walk out? We’ll raise ours, and very enthusiastically. If you’re not single, but still a devoted member of the Bey-hive, you can’t help but feel like you’re being judged if you step foot on the dance floor. You get that ‘You’re not one of us, get outtttt’ glare from the girls going stag, it’s real. If you ARE single, you run the risk of feeling embarrassed if there aren’t too many other unattached sisters there for, you know, solidarity. And if you’re the (un)lucky boyfriend or girlfriend of one of these ‘Single Ladies,’ there’s a good chance you’ll sit in your chair feeling like the walls are closing in on you for not putting a ring on that fast enough.
Yeah, we’ll speak for everyone when we say let’s wave buh-bye to this bachelorette-forever anthem. There are several other songs, too, that elicit sheer disgust from wedding guests and make brides and grooms want to rethink their choice in entertainment. Thankfully, 538, the website renowned for providing data for electoral races, just put out a study looking at the wedding songs that couples are no-holds-barred banning from their big day. Not simply saying ‘nah, you don’t have to play ‘Dancing Queen,’ we good,’ but straight-up banning the song entirely. ABBA, GTFO, please?
The study asked DJs for the songs they had been instructed not to play at weddings, and they weren’t shy about it. Something tells us these guys (or girls) are listening to their client couples, because one bad experience for a bride or groom-zilla can have huge consequences to their business. From the ‘Cupid Shuffle’ to ‘Call Me Maybe,’ the list accounts for percentages of DJ’s who wouldn’t spin these songs at their weddings for fear of death. Okay, maybe not that threatening, but pretty close.
As someone who cannot stand Pharrell’s ‘Happy,’ as in I went to the bathroom during this song at a wedding I went to last weekend, and wouldn’t come out until my hubby texted me it was over, I am glad to see that it made the list. #Sorrynotsorry. On the other hand, I could probably dance to ‘Shake It Off’ until my ass legit fell off. T.Swift wins. Always.
Interestingly enough, even though I’ve heard ‘Making Memories of Us’ and ‘I Don’t Dance’ quite a few times at recent nuptials, country music is not much a favorite, apparently. Of the DJs surveyed, 10 percent said they wiped their entire ‘Wagon Wheel’ and others like it wheelhouse. Sad day, love us some Nathan Carter. Rap wasn’t raging, either… 3 percent of DJs said their couples didn’t want any of these tracks for when they tied-the-knot.
