From the Bride
Our style is very “Coastal Living” and we love the water, so I wanted to create a very coastal, whimsy, southern vibe for the space. I was extremely fortunate my sister does graphic design, and she created everything from the invites to the signage and framed quotes we selected to display on the wedding day.
Throughout the planning processes, I wanted our guests to walk in and immediately know this was Robby and I’s wedding. Everything from the venue space to the ceremony speech, the colors we chose, and the décor reflected who we are and what we love as a couple. The best weddings we had been to in the past were very personalized, and I knew right away my main planning priority would be to represent “us.”
It’s funny how things always seem to end up as they should-and, despite any lingering worries, my husband and I totally felt that was the case. I would say the people we possibly spent the least amount of time with were our parents. There are so many people who want to see you, and your immediate family will feel more inclined to take a back seat and let your guests have the moment.
Looking back, I really wish we were around them more to share the experience. It’s hard not to get overwhelmed, but make sure you take a moment for both yourselves and your immediate family members.

First and foremost, I made a significant attempt to estimate a budget and track the actual costs throughout the planning process. One thing that ended up costing a lot more than we anticipated was the stationery and printing! And because we were having it outside of DC, hotel costs, etc also came into play. I have to admit that it was difficult to come up with a good estimate in advance, and there are some things you just can’t anticipate. (I still don’t know a hard number of where we ended up.) Don’t worry about cost to the point where it keeps you from enjoying the process, just do the best you can to prioritize! While we ended up being over my estimate, we wouldn’t have changed a single thing.
Be organized, make the effort to research your vendors, take one day at a time, try to visualize things from other people’s perspective when planning (parents, guests of different ages, guests with kids, etc.), stay in the moment the day of, and make sure to let your guests know their attendance is appreciated. But above all, my best advice would be to make your wedding personal.
