Where: La Baronia, Barcelona, Spain at a 13th Century Castle, owned by the same textile family
Who: 110 Guests coming from the US, Singapore, Thailand, India, Lebanon, Israel, Bali, London, Hawaii, Turkey, Puerto Rico, France, Sweden, Mexico, Germany, Japan, Indonesia, and China. Guests were instructed to follow black tie formal attire, long gowns, and tuxedos.
The week-long celebration commenced in Sitges with a Burning Man party, as the couple hails from the Bay Area, transitioned to a yacht club party the following night at local sailing club Red Fish, then progressed to a night of flamenco at Palau Dalmases, and culminated with the wedding at La Baronia, a 13th Century Castle.
The Bride wore three dresses that evening: Monique Lhullier for the ceremony, Liz Martinez for the reception and dinner, and Alexander McQueen for the late-night dance party. The Groom wore a custom suit from San Francisco tailor Klein Epstien. The bridesmaids wore silk slip dresses by Nili Lotan, and the three cherub flower girls wore US Angels dresses with sparkly slip-on shoes, except for one flower girl, who refused to go down the aisle without her pink Moana crocs. The bride thought that was wonderful.
The ceremony, officiated by the bride’s friend Bradley Wolfe incorporated loving wedding traditions from the various parts of the world the couple had visited throughout their lives. Jessica and James had a houppa cloth hand made by Julia Lines from Oakland. The gold threads represent the time, date, and location of the wedding.
The bride’s friends, Maura Rosenblit, Lauren Wolfe, and Kate Kaplan read the Seven Blessings in Hebrew and English, and her friends Avin Bansal and Nidhi Gupta blessed them while they made 7 circles around the candle used in Hindu traditions, wishing the couple good fortune.
The groom’s college teammate from his water polo days, who now lives in Thailand, Josh Morris and his wife Kat, brought 110 white string bracelets from Thailand which were passed out to every guest in attendance. Guests were told to tie the bracelets on each other and make a wish for the couple.
The bride’s good friend Eve Peters sang a beautiful rendition of Beyonce’s Halo to a string quartet, bringing many tears to the crowd. They closed with Allison Gay providing the breaking of the glass, and Semira challenging the couple to break two small red pouches filled with items to bring the couple good luck. The groom was able to smash his, so it is thought that he is the head of the household, but the bride’s good friend, Meredith Maines challenged this later on the dancefloor and had Jess smash her red pouch once more, since her very high Louboutins during the ceremony didn’t allow her an equal shot. In an effort to shirk gender stereotypes, the flower girl, Eva Brotons, was also in charge of the rings.
The ceremony led to a cocktail hour outdoors with the sun setting over the mountains. They transitioned to a seated dinner with beautiful lights, candles, and flowers outdoors. Many delightful speeches were made, and the dance floor broke out until 6 AM, after the hora, and a traditional Spanish paso doble the bride danced with her father. Both the parents of the groom and bride hail from Madrid and the Northern part of Spain. Family photographs of grandparents, aunts, uncles and children were laid out in gold picture frames, including one of a Spanish count (paternal great grandfather of the groom), the former King of Spain (with the groom’s paternal grandfather), and a Spanish stamp (with groom’s maternal grandfather, and famed Spanish pilot on it).
The night ended in the custom photo booth with small gold stars as the background, and late-night churros and chocolate, pizza, and Stanford (the bride's alma mater) and Princeton (the grooms alma mater) mini cakes. The party went until 6 AM, and no one was ready to go home. The couple hosted a private rooftop pool party at Hotel 1868 in Barcelona to decompress and say goodbye.
