Kate and Afsar got married on Dec 30, 2017, 8 years to the day they first met - something they only realized after the invitations had gone out. When it came to wedding details, they had two non-negotiable requests - that it be on a beach someplace warm, and that it be one hell of a party that reflected their very different cultural backgrounds. And thus they set out to plan a 3-day British/Indian party.
The big day was bookended by a mehendi the night before - a traditional Indian pre-wedding event where everyone dons Indian attire, the women get henna on their hands, and their closest friends and family put on choreographed Indian dances for the couple - and a glam-chic poolside NYE party to kick off the new year, and a new chapter in their lives.
On the day, as the bride and her bridesmaids were getting ready, the groom was ushered to the ceremony in song and dance, another Indian custom known as the baraat. The bride arrived shortly after in proper British fashion - in a Rolls Royce, with her father. Delivering on an old promise, Kate’s little brother Luke married the couple at sunset, wind in the air, and sand between nearly everyone's toes.
After a magical cocktail hour, guests made their way to the reception for a night of dinner and dancing, they were treated to a firework display set to the couple’s favorite songs. The floral chandelier from the beach ceremony was repurposed to arch over the sweetheart table.
The wedding favors were heavenly organic coconut wax candles featuring a custom drawing of the couple with their dogs Jake and Stella. They were hand-poured by Trish, one of Kate’s closest friends and owner of Fenwick Candles.
Other details that added to the perfect evening included a gif booth where their friends and family flocked to take the silliest of moving photos, a henna-inspired design on the wedding cake, a specialty cocktail - the Pat n’ Tonic - in remembrance of Kate’s uncle Patrick, and a band that kept nearly every one of the 200 guests on the dance-floor well past everyone’s bedtime.
