As an event violinist, I have the privilege of creating beautiful custom soundscapes for my clients’ celebrations. With weddings holding a particularly special place in my heart, I have put together these guidelines on 5 ways you can use music to create pockets of time around your special moments.
5. The Proposal
The big “Will You” is just as important as “I Do”, which is why we start with this as number five. This wedding is about the joining of your two lives, and it all begins here! Make it a magical moment by having a musician perform “your song” as you dance under the stars, serenade your love table-side as you drop to one knee, or arrange for a walk after you pop the question and just “happen” upon a strolling musician to serenade you as you bask in your newly-engaged-ness!
4. The First Look
Take it all in! Seriously – everything! The Reception space, the Ceremony space, everything will be going by in a blur once your guests arrive! So be sure to give yourselves the time to enjoy all your hard work!
Take the time to enjoy a first look with your partner, too! These precious moments spent together before the Ceremony can help with jitters and make for some incredibly sweet photos! Remember, you’ll be so busy throughout your day that you really aren’t going to have any other alone time, so be sure to work with your musicians to determine how they can best underscore these private moments for you!
3. The Recessional
The Recessional is the song that underscores the walk back up the aisle once you’re pronounced married (YAY!) Surrounded by your family and friends cheering and congratulating you, this selection is an upbeat and energetic song that transitions into the next phase of your celebration! Work with your musicians to up the energy here – you’ll be taking your first steps with your new spouse to this song!
2. Grand Entrance
It has all finally come together. You dreamed about this day. Your love is waiting for you at the other end of the aisle, and you’re dressed in your dream wedding ensemble. All your family and friends are here and your hair, your shoes, every accessory that you carefully selected is on display for this: the longest and shortest walk of your life!
This is number one on our list, because this is THE quintessential wedding moment – the beginning of the walk that will end in a life-long commitment to the one you truly love. This is a moment to be savored. How will you feel? Joyful? Solemn? Nostalgic? Romantic? The perfect musical selection will also allow your guests to experience this moment with you!
1. The First Dance
Did you know that a big regret many couples have is not choreographing their first dance? It may get swept aside during the planning process, but uncomfortably swaying back and forth for 3 minutes will feel like an eternity (for everyone!) Work with your musicians to get a recording of your first dance song in advance! When you have an idea about the tempo and the feel of the song, you can practice adding in little flourishes for the big day! (And honestly, it’s super fun to pull off a dip or a spin and to hear all your guests go “oooh!!”)
