John and Katie's teen spirit wedding in Texas truly has it all. Romance, class, and a kickass 90's themed reception party to boot! Now who can say no to that!? When planning their wedding, these two "twitterpated" Texan's were determined to make the whole day meaningful, and we would be the first to say, goal accomplished! Centered in their home town, with rings that memorialized their grandparents, and dance jams they grew up to, it's no wonder their friends are already asking for a vow renewal!
This gorgeous champagne and charcoal colored wedding took place at the lovely Texas venue, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. To see more of all of it, be sure to check out the full gallery here. It's well worth the visit to soak up all the fabulous details captured beautifully by Awake Photography.
From the Bride:Our rings were a tribute to our grandparents. John's grandmother wore an emerald ring given to her by John's dad during the Vietnam War. When she passed away a few years ago, John restored the emerald, designed the setting, and proposed with the most meaningful, loving gift that I've ever received. John's wedding band was his grandfather's that we had dipped in white gold and engraved inside with the words "From this Day Forward." We placed both rings on my grandmother's bible in advance of the ceremony for good luck. It helped us pay tribute to the special people in our lives that are no longer with us.
One of my favorite memories was walking toward John down the aisle and feeling present in the moment when exchanging our vows. We kept everything very traditional during our ceremony. The words spoken to each other are so powerful and sacred. I remember every moment at the altar, including the deep breaths, smiles and the shaking knees.
From the beginning, John and I knew that the most important thing about our wedding day was to focus on the meaning of marriage and to make sure that everything we did felt personal and true to us as a couple. We wanted the overall vibe to be carefree, relaxed, simple and very natural. In the midst of planning the wedding, we opened our first business (a juice bar!) and moved into a house. (Nothing like rolling a bunch of major life changes into one 6-month period!)
We chose to be married in my hometown of Austin, TX, as the city has always served as an escape for us to take a break from reality and recharge! We were lucky to find venues that were beautiful on their own- it was perfect, because we were able to let the surroundings be a reflection of us without feeling stressed to overcompensate with decorations. This was the best way for us to go forward with "less is more," to remain mindful of what the day truly represents: a celebration of love and happiness.
The color scheme was very neutral- a mix of nude/champagne, soft greenery, and charcoal grey. Christin, our florist at Clementine Floral Design, was incredible- I gave her direction to only choose wildflowers that were in season (no color scheme), and she produced the most amazing collection of flowers for the day. It was a dream!
The 90's party...After eating tons of TX BBQ, the only natural thing to do is transform the reception into a 90's party. So, we did. We passed out slap bracelets, neon sunglasses and jammed out to Wilson Phillips, 2Pac, Pearl Jam, and ended the night with "I Swear" by All-4-One. So awesome!
If I could change one thing, I would have made it a point to talk to every person at the wedding. I regret missing out on some conversations with really close family and friends, but it's almost impossible to make time to tell each person how much you appreciate them celebrating with you. My only wish is that we could press "repeat" on the day. My friends are already asking for some kind of vow renewal next year. We'll see!
