Soft Rustic DIY Wedding at The Newland Barn: A Dreamy Affair

wedding photography couple session with giant balloons

Heather and Zach's soft and sweet rustic DIY wedding was held at The Newland Barn on the grounds of the oldest residence built in the city of Huntington Beach, CA. The day of their wedding was a chilly, cloudy day with a coastal breeze from the nearby beach, and everything turned out beautifully.

Heather wanted to keep her colors soft and neutral including soft pinks, peach, creams, browns and golds. If you're looking for ideas for a soft, rustic, and intimate wedding with personal touches then you'll definitely want to take a peek at the full gallery, photographed by Jessica Di Bella. Sweet & Simple Wedding Touches

The groom and groomsmen were decked out in navy blue to add a nice masculine contrast. The bride painted the tin cans used for vases herself, adding delicate little touches to each one to make it unique. The floral arrangements included extra greenery with pops of white daisies and babies breath. Simple touches included a sweet painted globe that says "I love you to the ends of the earth" that was gifted to the groom prior to the ceremony, a tree covered in twinkle lights, photos and photos of the couple complete with a sign that said "Mutual Weirdness Forever", hand painted signs, floral crowns, lawn games and handmade desserts and pies by family and friends .

Clouds Part For First Kiss

The couple had personal friends of theirs perform during the ceremony, and while they took communion together as husband and wife to add a sentimental touch. The bride and groom were able to have moments alone together after the ceremony in an open field behind the barn, where their portraits were taken. Heather notes walking down the aisle to Zach as the moment she most looked forward to, and guests can probably agree it was an emotional moment. As soon as Heather and her father began to walk down the aisle, rain drops started to fall lightly upon everyone and the sun broke through the clouds as soon as they took their first kiss (no joke!)

Keep Weather In Mind

The one thing that we would have probably done differently, was chosen a different day. We got married mid November and were expecting the worst possible weather. Don't get me wrong, we love the rain and it's supposed to be good luck, but no one ever prays for that kind of weather, you know? When I was waiting to walk down the isle, it started to drizzle. IT WAS MAGICAL. Then, when I grabbed Zach's hands (my husband) it stopped drizzling and didn't rain for the entire night. However, there was a breezy cool wind that wouldn't die down... ever... so all of my older family members and friends left after eating their dinner.

Make Sure To Stop & Breathe

As far as advice goes, the BEST advice that anyone gave me all throughout our wedding season was to have moments where I would stop, breathe, and take in my surroundings. I can remember doing this as my bridesmaids and I were getting dressed and remembering how blessed I was to be here on this day with these people. Then, I peeked outside of the barn and I was shocked. Everything about what I had envisioned the day to look like (EVERYTHING was DIY) was how I thought it to be x100. It was perfect and beautiful and everyone had just stepped up and gone above and beyond to make our day perfect. SO PERFECT. Also, make sure you designate someone to bring you food, or else you won't be able to eat!!
