Jane and John both run professionally, which is how they met. The two became closer than ever after Jane suffered a terrible hiking accident and John was right there to care for her. Their love story continued with a romantic beach proposal followed by this amazing rustic wedding.
Read on to hear so much more about this couple's special day — including the story of the romantic proposal — and Jane's detailed breakdown of their wedding budget! Don't forget, you can always view more of this rustic chic wedding at Pickering Barn in the full gallery here, all beautifully captured by Catalina Jean Photography.
From Catalina Jean Photography:John proposed to Jane on a golden September evening at Discovery Park in Seattle, WA. The evening began when instead of going to dinner John blindfolded Jane and had her guess where he was taking her. Then John drove to the beach at Discovery Park, one of Jane’s favorite places in all of Seattle. The couple sat on a log on the beach and John gave Jane a wooden box that he had made, filled with the writing they had done together in their time dating.
They decided to write for a few minutes as the sun set behind the Olympic mountains. John simply wrote “Jane, will you marry me?” on his piece of paper. After Jane had read what he wrote, John got down on one knee in the sand and showed Jane his paper and pulled out the ring that the couple had designed together. John asked Jane to be his wife and she said yes!
The ring designs were something very personal to the couple. Both rings gave ode to their love of the wilderness. John grew up in Montana and spent his whole life spending time in the state's beautiful country. Jane's ring was designed by E.E. Robbins and resembled a wrapped tree
branch. John's ring, designed by Johan Rust of Custom Jewelry by Johan, was inset with real elk horn.
Pickering Barn was a perfect fit for the dream rustic wedding Jane had in mind. It was such a gorgeous venue both inside and out. Jane's cousin, who worked for years in a french bakery, created the fabulous cakes. The flavors were dark chocolate hazelnut, lemon with lemon curd and yellow cake with fresh raspberry buttercream.
From the Bride:For our reception we had purchased 4 kegs of root beer. It is John's favorite drink and we wanted to use it for our toasts. Unfortunately, we had no one on duty to refill people's cups and everyone got 1/2 a mason jar of root beer and that was it! We ended up with almost 3 full kegs of root beer after the wedding left over! That's a lot of root beer to finish up! I wish we had paid a little more attention to this detail, it's always good to double-check reception duties even if you think you have every detail covered. ( :
We saved A LOT of money by getting friends and family help with our DIY wedding...which made it even more special and also cost-effective! My sister's friend from college, Catalina did our photography for next too nothing because we were her first wedding and she wanted portfolio work. A HUGE blessing to us as she is an INCREDIBLE photographer and I'm sure will make a good living off it in the future. My talented cousin, Julie Bilbro who was the pastry chef at a french bakery for many years, did the cakes...excellent and very cheap. Also my cousin who plays in a string quartet did the music with his group for a very reason able cost for us.
I designed the save the dates and invitations online at minted.com which saved money and I also was able to find my Pronovias $1700 bridal gown at a sample sale at a bridal boutique. After alterations it ended up being just $800! Finally, last but not least, some of my mom's friends who do event planning and decorating took over decorating our reception and ceremony...they truly worked their magic by using their own things and borrowing props from friends for our vintage look and stayed within budget too on the few items they had to purchase.
We worked hard to stay in budget but also were very blessed with some great people helping us out.
