Colorado Boho Wedding: Meghan and Matt’s Rustic Celebration at Planet Bluegrass

Colorful wedding bouquet resting on natural river stones

Meghan and Matt knew from the start that they wanted their wedding to be a complete reflection of them, and the first step to doing that was finding an outdoor venue in Colorado. Planet Bluegrass was the perfect fit, allowing for the ceremony and bar to be outside outside, while the dinner tables were set up inside the Wildflower pavilion, an open-air but covered space.
The day was filled with a boho vibe that was swept along by the gorgeous scenery. This Planet Bluegrass rustic woodsy wedding will leave you longing for the outdoors, take it all in via the full gallery here, photographed by Megan Newton Photography.

Colorado Boho Wedding

Our wedding style was a mix of fun garden party (think hula hoops!) and Colorado-boho. I wanted to feel like a woodland goddess (and I did!). Our first look took my breath away. We couldn’t stop shaking and touching each others faces. Then there was a moment we were on the dance floor and realized that every one of our 135 guests was also dancing with us. Having all of our friends and family together at Planet Bluegrass was completely magical. One of our friends came up to us that night and said that our wedding looked like an episode of Parenthood. I can die happy!

Megan Newton was incredible. We wanted a photographer that we would also consider a friend, and she was perfect! The first time she met with us she asked us questions about each other, and opening up to her brought us closer to each other as a couple. We immediately hired her and wouldn’t change that decision for the world. We wanted our photos to capture the day naturally, without awkward poses or a strict schedule. Megan would constantly ask to make sure we were comfortable and the photos reflect her talent and ability to tell our story through candid images.

Important Roles For Dogs

Our ceremony took place on the banks of the St. Vrain River with towering redstone cliffs as our backdrop. Our altar consisted of a whiskey barrel underneath a vintage arch that was draped in wildflowers and decked out with an antique chandelier! We watered an aspen sapling for our unity ceremony while “Hello My Old Heart” by The Oh Hellos played and the St. Vrain River flowed behind us. Our dog Mumford served as our ring bearer and our dog Laney Mae was our flower girl. They kept trying to escape for a swim in the river during the ceremony!

Budget Early

The one thing I wish I had done differently is set my budget sooner in the planning process. I had a general idea of how much I had to spend total, but waited far too long to break it down between vendors. I also did not realize how expensive rentals would be and wish I would have asked our venue what was included. We ended up renting everything (utensils, glasses, chairs, etc) which cost us thousands that we didn't account for up front.

The Best Advice

My biggest advice is to be authentic and intentional with wedding planning so that you day is a true reflection of who you are as a couple. Your wedding is a huge milestone and will certainly be one of the most blissful days of your life, but always keep your feet on the ground during planning and remember that it’s not about diamond rings or what your cake looks like, it’s about the beautiful commitment you’re making to each other for the rest of your lives. I would also recommend starting your wedding day with yoga or meditation. I booked a private yoga class for my bridesmaids and loved having time to relax and set an intention for my big day. And of course, have fun! This is YOUR day so live it up!
