Before we dive into Marina and Hone's wedding, we have to comment on her stunning gown designed by Collette Dinnigan. She actually saw the highly embellished bodice, and the soft tulle skirt on a magazine cover 12 months ahead of the wedding, and then matched the groomsmen and bridesmaids around it.
The entire wedding is fabulous, and Marina goes into more detail about the entire day, so be sure to read on. As always you can see all of this black and pink wedding captured by A Couple of Night Owls in the full gallery here. Be sure not to miss their wedding film by Bubblerock below as well.
From The Bride:I didn't restrict the look to just one decade - the bridesmaids had a 60s feel, my hair was a bit 40s and the groom and groomsmen were more modern, however the bow ties served as a retro throwback
I picked all dahlias but due to a very dry summer there were not enough to go around, so our florist featured dahlias for the bridal party posies and sporadically throughout the guest tables and added her own touch to the rest of the arrangements, which we were really happy with. You can't always get everything as you imagine it, but in the end we got so many compliments on the flowers and honestly I think they turned out prettier than if we had all dahlias.
I also liked that Melanie from All The Frills hand crafted the place settings and feature wall, and came up with the idea to hang olive leaves above the bridal table to create a focal point. As a graphic designer, I couldn't bring myself to outsource the stationery, so the invitations, ceremony programs, seating chart and menus were designed by me. The ceremony programs served as fans which were handy in the heat. The menus doubled as place cards; each guest's name was printed on their menu, as I didn't want to clutter the tables
We were lucky to stumble across Rebecca from The Cake Parlour, who actually custom made our favorite flavors - dark chocolate and raspberry mudcake, covered in a white chocolate ganache and coconut. The service we received was very personal and our cake was absolutely delicious!
Some of the guests said that although they had little room after dessert, the cake was the best they had ever had at any wedding. Having foreseen this, we served some on the night and the rest the next day at a BBQ.
I loved how the bridal party turned out, it was just as I imagined. I'm a big fan of Australian designer Alannah Hill's retro feminine style and had actually purchased their dresses on a whim whilst shopping for a coat. They were exactly what I was after - '60s fun party frock' rather than 'formal bridesmaid gown', and perfectly matched my blush and noir color scheme.
Thankfully the girls thought they were perfect even though I knew it wasn't necessarily the style they would have chosen themselves. I was lucky to have amazingly accommodating bridesmaids who, having also recently had their own weddings, ensured a stress-free process.
You really must watch Hone and Marina's wedding film captured by Bubblerock. So fun to see all the lovely details up close.
