Caitlyn and Mark put tons of time, effort, and love into their stunning wedding. The setting was picturesque, everything was ready to go, and there'd been no rain for months. What could possibly go wrong? Turns out it decided to rain that day. A lot. We think the day was still flawless and the rain added its own charm.
This lovely wedding full of love and rain serves as a reminder to let the small things go and focus on the beauty of the day. You're getting married for a reason and the little things don't matter, at all. See all the cute details in the full gallery here, photographed by Pat Furey Photography.
We planned to get married on top of a remote hill overlooking the idyllic Catskill mountains and spent months landscaping our backyard, laying out the tents, putting in electric down at the "park" as we began calling it, building a screened in room and a kitchen "barn" for the cooks to be in. Needless to say, we put our everything into it and we were so excited to celebrate. The week of the party the forecast said 0% chance of rain. One hour before our ceremony, 100%. It hadn't rained in months upstate. I'm talking driest summer on record. Our wedding day set records for how much water came out of the sky.
30 minutes before our ceremony, in the midst of our first look photo shoot, the sky opened up and down it came. I cried at first, mostly because I was so upset that we couldn't get married on the hill. So 5 minutes before we were supposed to walk down the aisle we made the call to bring everyone down off the hill. Mark and I took a few swigs of whiskey and had our first dance in my parent's kitchen just letting the disappointment float away as best we could. It was him and I at that point and I could not have gotten through the night without him.
Our 170 guests crammed into our dance tent, no seats, soaking wet and I'm sure confused at this point. The ceremony though... I can't write without crying! It was the most love I have ever felt in my life. It was real love. Everyone was wet, they were soaked actually... but it didn't matter. We all looked like wet dogs by the time we got to the "alter" and our vows were filled with whiskey tears and laughter. Looking back, it still was the best day of my life. You definitely have waves of disappointment at times but it made me realize the bigger picture in life which is that love, real love, and your friends and family.
