Becoming better together

From the groom: Mark is a creative hairstylist who enjoys the moment, while I am a logical software engineer who is constantly worried about the future. We have had very different paths in life, and though the first year of dating long distance was tough, we simply just loved being around each other. After Mark moved to California to be with me, we slowly learned that we could learn a lot from our differences, Mark needed to be more practical, while I needed to stop being so neurotic and enjoy life. Over the next four years, we slowly realized that we were making each other better people, and that's how we knew we were going to be spending the rest of our lives together.

Intimate, personal and uniquely them

When we started planning the wedding, our number one priority was to make sure that this wedding clearly represented Mark and Robin. For the ceremony, we wanted it to be intimate, personal, and uniquely us. We felt the traditional wedding ceremony setup was too formal, so we arranged our ceremony such that our guests would sit in a circle surrounding the stage where we would get married. We also opted to skip vows, which can sometimes sound a little too formal and cliched, and chose to go a much more personal route of reading heartfelt letters to each other.

Amazing details

For the reception, we tried our best to inject our personalities into the details as much as we could. Mark is a huge Star Wars fan so we entered our reception to The Imperial March and our best men saluting us with light sabers. Robin's dream is to be a contestant on The Amazing Race, so we had guests sign a globe, in place of a guestbook, asking where we should go when we get on the show (ahem, if the Amazing Race casting director is reading this, please call me ASAP and we'll be at the starting line!). Needless to say, we had no qualms with throwing the traditional wedding out the window and really made it our own, unforgettable evening.

In a heartbeat

Our big day flew right by! While our favorite moments include tearing up to each other's ceremony letters and being toasted (and even roasted) by our best men's speeches, we would have to say that our favorite part of the wedding was just being in a room with the people who we love the most. The day after our wedding, Mark, with a huge grin on his face, asked me, "Can we get married again?" I couldn't help but smile back. Honestly, I would do it again in a heartbeat.
