If you are looking to have a "not your typical wedding" in Hawaii then might we suggest the gorgeous location of Haiku Mill on Maui. Our next couple found this stunning space in their efforts to steer away from beach or resort ceremonies and we could not be any more impressed. The lush overgrown nature of this wedding venue put our jaws on the floor and we suspect it will do the same for you.
You can thank Haiku Mill for bringing you this post and you can thank NV Maui Media for all the beautiful photos that captured this heartwarming day. You can see more of it all in the full gallery.
Ian and I met in high school when we were 14. We were best friends for years, eventually, we lost touch for several years in college and reconnected when we were 20. We began dating then and have been together ever since.
When Ian and I reconnected, we had our first date at a beautiful park in Seattle that overlooks the entire city. It was always our spot. He took me back there one day, we had a picnic and he told me how it was initially the place where we began our relationship and now it was the beginning of the next steps, our marriage. I was completely shocked, the whole thing was absolutely perfect.
Hawaii was special to Ian because he is part Hawaiian and also spent a lot of his childhood there. When he suggested Hawaii for our wedding location, it obviously sounded like a great choice!
When we were looking for venues in Hawaii it was really important for us to do something unique, we wanted to avoid a beach or hotel wedding. It was important to us that our venue was a reflection of us. We began our search of venues on Maui and eventually stumbled on Haiku Mill. We were speechless, it was more beautiful than we could have ever imagined.
We put so much thought into the themes of our wedding. One of the biggest themes was music. We have always bonded over music from the day we met. We have an extensive vinyl collection and our favorite thing to do together is going to shows or listen to records in our living room. Prince is one of our favorites. We walked down the aisle to "Beautiful Ones", and our officiant included the infamous opening lines of "Let's Go Crazy" in his speech. We curated every single song that played, each one had a significant meaning for us, the music selection was definitely the most important detail for us.
We also added touches of daisies throughout the wedding to pay respects to my aunt who passed. It was so beautiful it felt like she was there with us. Basically we just wanted everything to be extremely personal, we are typically very private about our relationship and we were excited to open up to our closest friends and family. We wanted to show how thankful we were for every person there, who in some way, brought Ian and me together. So we thought of all the ways we could make it a memorable and special night for our guests.
My wedding dress (by BHLDN) was nontraditional, that was the first thing I loved about it. When I put it on, it was light and easy to move in and it felt like me. I fell in love with my dress because it felt like an extension of me, also it was an extremely good price so I loved it even more!
Our day was absolute perfection. We put a lot of thought into every detail and reference and wanted our wedding to be unique and personable. None of it could have been actualized without Chelsea and her team at Haiku Mill. They made our dream wedding a reality and it couldn't have been a more perfect day.
