Super Chic Millwick-Marvimon Real Wedding In Downtown Los Angeles

grooms wedding suit

When your guests are all dancing during a 100+ degree heat wave you know you've done something right! Andrew and Dae exceeded their guests expectations in creating a unique and fun wedding that was 100% them. They started by picking out their venue first finding their dream location at Millwick. Not only did this venue have a great canvas for their Disco Oasis wedding but it is also located where they met in the art district.

From The Grooms

We felt like there was a lot of pressure on us with our wedding, whether or not it was real or just in our heads. It was the first gay wedding in the family, we’re both the first of the younger generation in our families to get married, and it was also the first gay wedding for a lot of people attending. Needless to say we wanted it to exceed every expectation while being unique, fun and 100% us. Dae works in PR and Andrew works in the film industry so those strengths really came together in both planning the actual wedding and conceptualizing what we wanted it to look like.

Our venue was the first piece of the puzzle and Millwick really spoke to us as it had a lot of character while also being a great canvas for our own ideas. It’s also located in the arts district of DTLA which we love and we really wanted to get married in the city of LA, even though both of our families are from the east coast. It’s where we met and live so we wanted that to be a part of our day.

Our tuxes were custom made by JB Clothier’s, a local suit maker in Downtown LA. Jerry was amazing to work with and took our ideas and elevated them with his amazing work. He went above and beyond to make sure we felt like a million dollars on our wedding day.

A Disco Oasis

We both love music festivals and they ended up being very instrumental in our relationship, so that may have played a part in landing on our theme - Disco Oasis. We wanted everything to be funky and colorful but not in your typical rainbow way (except for our beautiful cake by Flouring. We had to have at least one rainbow!). Since the wedding was at the end of summer going into fall it made sense for the color palette to be warmer tones like yellows, oranges, and pinks. Working with our amazing florist, Shindig Chic, helped settle this as well as the types of florals. Tropicals really compliment the space and everything just popped and fit together perfectly. The colorful florals and decorations were also the perfect contrast to our white tuxes and the wedding party’s black attire.

Andrew, being a creative working in the film industry, wanted to make something for the wedding to add another personal touch. Since there was a projector and screen at the venue and movies are a big part of their life, that seemed like the perfect fit. He made film title and credit inspired backdrops for the seating chart, dinner, and dancing. He pulled inspiration from the venue and other decor to give it some neon tropical flair.

Making It Fun For The Guests

So much about the wedding for us came back to making it fun for the guests and subverting expectations. A lot of people were traveling from out of town and we wanted it to be one to remember. For example we had a DJ (normal), but then also had a horn trio come out and accompany them during the dancing which surprised everyone just made the music all the more lively. In addition to the catering, we had a late night taco cart to help show off LA's amazing food to the guests from out of town. I think the little touches added so much and the fact that we had so many people up dancing during the 100+ degree heat wave in LA was a testament to how much fun the guests were having.

Being so far away from our families it felt like we were on our own a lot during such a stressful time of planning, so picking the right vendors was key. Everyone totally got our vibe, was so helpful, and just put our mind at ease so when the time came for the actual wedding we were able to be in the moment, enjoy it, and have a blast. It really was a perfect day.
