This Moody Wedding Inspiration Has a DIY Moss Table

What’s better than a moody boho wedding inspiration? One with a chic table you can totally DIY yourself! Events By Merida put this styled shoot together on the banks of the Delaware River and incorporated moody colors and natural elements inspired by Christina Rossetti's poem, Goblin Market.

With That Werks Photography behind the lens, they brought this unique yet sophisticated style to life. But our favorite detail is the moss-covered table, which was put together with a mix of new and thrifted items, fresh fruit, and watercolor menus designed by Cupcake Graphics. From Events By Merida: This shoot had been on my Wish List for a long time. Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market poem is one of my favorites and it has lovely imagery that lends well to a design style. I knew from the get-go that I wanted the couple to be two femme persons because Goblin Market has been held up as a sapphic work. Photographer Chris Sztybel jumped right on board before I even had a chance to explain fully what I was doing!

When it came time to design the tablescape, I started with a foundation of moss. It helps create a lush feel for whatever you're doing next. If you're worried about it getting in the way of the guests, keep it to the center of the table. However, I would strongly suggest not harvesting moss from your backyard, but purchasing it- it will keep the table from getting a lot of soil on it. From there, I used an inexpensive candelabra along with some thrifted candle holders for height, along with maroon candles to give it a bit of color. Gold geometrics broke up the dark colors of the table. I used copper chargers with blue napkins in keeping with the theme, and Cupcake Graphic's menus added a lovely touch with her watercolor design.

For the tablescape, I started with a bed of moss ($3) to cover most of the table- I wanted it to feel like a forest.

From there, I anchored the centerpiece with a thrifted candelabra, and two brass candlesticks ($3). The champagne glasses were thrifted, but originally came from Anthropologie. If there's anything to break your budget on, champagne glasses from Anthropologie aren't it, no matter how cute they are. Full disclosure: I volunteer for a non-profit's thrift store, so I tend to find interesting things that normally would get tossed or given to Habitat for Humanity.

The maroon candles gave the table a little color- I was concerned that black might make it too dark ($5). Copper chargers gave a metallic pop to the place setting ($.90 each). The gold geometric pieces were $4 each. The fruit itself cost about $5-6 from a stand (it's hard estimating that one, just because I bought quite a bit for the bouquets, tables, props, and then eventually had a ton leftover). The fruit was the key element in making this tablescape work. It's a central theme to the original poem. Fruit creates great colors on the table as well, from the deep purple-blue of plums to the dark red of the pomegranates. It's considerably cheaper than floral arrangements, and it is Merida-proof. By that I mean, if I can do it, anyone can do it.

The hardest thing about DIY is A) taking the time to hunt for these things on sale or thrifted, and B) having it all match when you're doing an entire room. If you're looking to do a style like what I did for this shoot, you have to be willing to let things get eclectic, and tie it together with some consistent elements- same color chargers, same color candles, etc.
