No matter who you are or where you call home, 2020 has had a profound impact on the way we live our lives. Whether you’ve had changes to your job, social circles, health, or even all the above and more, each and every one of us is living with more stress and turmoil than before. In years past it has always been a relaxing option to relieve some stress by enjoying the beauty of the world around us. However, many of us have been cooped up in our homes since late winter or, for us in California, have been wearing masks not only to battle COVID but to filter the wildfire-soaked air around us.
This year has been especially hard for those wishing to join together in an expression of love while in the presence of family and friends. Weddings are a wonderful opportunity to come together in joy with those you care about most, but the restrictions from social distancing and the turmoil of the recent wildfires have placed significant barriers on this cherished tradition.
With a longing for a change of pace and a desire for some fresh air in my lungs, I knew that a styled shoot with a purpose to remind us of all the beauty that is everywhere and natural to California was the perfect remedy for an otherwise restless year.
For this special shoot, we choose the Bernardus Lodge and Spa in Carmel Valley, California as our backbone for inspiration. With the garden in full bloom and the landscape bursting with golds and greens, I felt my soul being cleansed as I walked the grounds. With so many gorgeous locations it was beyond easy to find the perfect spots to create our intimate, outdoor wedding. For the furnishings, we worked with Lux Event Rentals And Design to find chic and playful pieces that enhanced the venue with modern minimalism. I wanted the venue to exude romance and intimacy by simply accenting the already present splendor.
The vast majority of the floral arrangements were local to the area and organically grown. Picking from a wide range of farms including Blue Heron Farms, Laurel Canyon Farm, Tracy Rose Farm, and Fieldsketch Farm, we were inspired by the coastal landscape in early summer where the lush abundance of spring meets the dry, washed-out colors of the summer months.
For refreshment, special drinks were prepared for this event made from a proprietary mix of chamomile and strawberries. These local ingredients pair nicely and are in abundance this time of year. Under the marbled buttercream cake exterior is a Thai tea cake with coconut and mango curd that complements the table settings with wafer sails that seem to dance in the wind.
