Atalaya Castle

When choosing a venue for this Lowcountry regency elopement, Atalaya Castle ranked high, as it has a story of its own. Archer Huntington and his wife Anna built this castle on the ocean in 1931, inspired by Moorish architecture. Anna, an artist, spent many days in the 30 rooms that surround the large courtyards working on her sculptures.

The Inspiration

On the day of the shoot, the windows remained open allowing the soft light and distant noises of ocean waves to stream through. As soon as we walked into Atalaya Castle, it felt as though we had stepped into a piece of time experiencing what Anna must have felt nearly 100 years ago as she worked on her craft.

It was important when designing the day to include elements that reflected the timeless ambiance of the environment. It all started in the details with Champagne Maker sketching and painting the finest details onto the invitation suite. The suite includes watercolor paintings of the wrought iron grills designed by the Huntington’s that guard the castle windows. Along with timeless coastal sketches to bring in the coastal feel. Lilac And Lark Studio then hand-crafted custom Lowcountry-inspired intaglios to pair with the paper goods.

The Details

This style of crafting is very similar to the style of sculptures that Anna herself would have designed nearly 100 years ago. The venue was then filled with hand-dyed silk from natural elements by Jeni’s Silk. Each strip of silk cut and crafted to reflect the whimsical era of the inspiration behind the elopement. Willow Event Designs then completed the look by bringing in the fresh, wild, and loose floral arrangements to complete the sun-soaked breezy ocean day at the castle.

Bridal Looks

On the day of the shoot, the bride came wearing the ceremony Gala dress by Modern Trousseau Charleston. The lace pattern on the dress was personally hand-sewn and crafted onto the dress and the veil by their designers. The craftsmanship of this dress perfectly reflected the detail and precision of that era.

After the bride strode down the aisle in her Gala dress equipped with pockets, she then changed into the lacey Victorian dinner dress, also handcrafted by Modern Trousseau Charleston. Beautiful Salon and Spa then dipped into the regency of the day with hairstyles that combined color, whimsical floral, and bold styling.

Reception Goals

The day went on with the couple basking in the inspiration of the era by the candle glow at the dinner table. The modern twist to this Lowcountry regency was as unique as it was timeless. All of the details of that day came together to marry the architecture, history, and craft of the castle as well as the bold and innovative touches of today.
