Artists have a certain eye for light and color that intrigue and inspire them, this leads to pieces that leave the viewer wishing to step into and explore it; At least that is the case for Vermont painter, Horace Brown. And as his estate, North Mowing is now a hot spot for weddings and events, it was the perfect place for Events By Sorrell, Emily Herzig Floral Studio, and Kate Preftakes Photography to create a landscape inspired wedding day!

The Inspiration

North Mowing is a 230-acre estate in Springfield, Vermont. The property’s nine buildings are arranged on a series of stone terraces which take advantage of expansive views of rural hayfields, Mt. Ascutney, and the Connecticut River Valley. The landscaping and gardens were created by Ellen Biddle Shipman, who also designed St. Gauden’s gardens in New Hampshire and was once owned by the artist and State Senator Horace Brown. This styled shoot pays homage to Horace Brown, an influential Vermont-based painter, and student of the great American impressionist Willard Metcalf. His most frequent subject was the Vermont landscape, presenting its unparalleled natural beauty in the concise style of nineteenth-century Americana. Our color palette included vibrant greens and yellows, and rustic browns in the style of Horace Brown’s still life vistas. 

The Flowers

Emily Herzig worked with the colors found all around the property and created a pallet that complimented the peaches, blues, and yellows. She sourced delicate fresh flowers from local flower farms to create the most gorgeous florals. Her cascading bridal bouquet worked perfectly with the bride’s blue Leanne Marshall gown and the groom’s boutonniere used Lily of the Valley which was growing all around the property. She and her team decorated a vintage blue VW bus and installed a hanging floral piece above the bar. 

The Decor

Sorrell Downing designed the lush table beginning with brown velvet Latavola tablecloths with gauze napkins. She layered wooden chargers with VT hand-thrown pottery plates, hand-dipped beeswax candles on modern silver candlesticks, and menus designed by Windsor Rose. We worked with Horace Brown’s color palette of blending earth tones and keeping true to Vermont roots. 

Jaime from Autumn Nomad used the historic mapmaking history from the property as inspiration for her hand-painted groom’s cake. North Mowing will be hosting a limited number of exclusive weddings on their property and our team jumped at the chance to photograph a styled shoot there! The rock walls, historic painted murals, and grand vistas make this property a perfect background for a lush garden party wedding.
