During a time where we have been forced to look at what is most important, came this collective effort of creatives, which revolved around the conversation regarding what matters most to us all as event professionals, and how proud we are to work in such an amazing destination wedding location like Costa Rica.
With Tropical Occasions at the helm, Costa Rica’s very first wedding planners with over 20 years of planning, designing, and producing events in this beautiful country a goal was discussed for this shoot. The goal was to showcase the vast amount of wedding elements this beloved country has to offer. Costa Rica is not only a fabulous location but also boasts so much talent in all facets of the wedding industry. From the flowers to the fashion, every element was meant to capture the creative ability that we are fortunate to have, being in such a small spot on the map.
The production took place in the region of Guanacaste, in the small surfer town of Tamarindo, home to several private estates along the beach, providing a picturesque, intimate setting with spectacular sunset views. We selected the one & only Villa Morbeza, which forms part of a small collection of homes offered by Elite Beach Villas. The house & its grounds are impeccable in design, making it a lovely canvas to work with for a wedding celebration.
This whole project began with the bride’s custom dress, designed & created by Costa Rican designer Elky Suarez. This dress designer makes couture gowns for brides based on individual personalities. The idea was to showcase something elegant & modern-minimalist, yet versatile & comfortable. The removable sleeves allowed the bride to play around with different styles throughout the day, without the hassle of changing an entire outfit, which any bride would be happy about! Meanwhile, all the accessories were created by Madre Perla, a Costa Rican designer who curates lovely hair pieces & jewelry. The earrings were designed specifically for this production, to tie the overall design in with the bride’s fashion.
We teamed up with Meric Moments, a local photographer & videographer duo that does great work both locally and abroad. Our focus for the design was to create something sustainable & stunning, since the region spends half the year receiving no rain, and is prone to very dry conditions. Considering this, we wanted to feature a design that could be achieved using floral that grows in & around this specific region of the country, thrives in dry climates, and lastly, captures the clean & organic beauty of the villa & its grounds.
The spaces are filled with details of indigenous woods, and beachy yet elegant tones. Working with Flores de Campos, we used a combination of Dendrobium Orchids, light peach & pink Anthuriums, and Garden Roses as floral elements to bring some color & delicacy into the design. These were mixed with dry elements, such as palm leaves, pampas grass, and many foraged goods, like dried seeds, twine & nuts.
For the ceremony space, we wanted something slightly different from the traditional arch, while still highlighting local elements. We opted for a clean, non-symmetrical look, and incorporated large clay pots, inspired by the pottery of Guaitil & Chorotega cultures-- the native, aboriginal cultures of Costa Rica. We felt it was a perfect blend of modern & organic, and so we mimicked this concept in all the spaces. With the help of fantastic local decor & floral providers, Eventos Artesanos & Los Primos, we created the lounges, bar area, and table setups.
To complement the delicate colors & textures of the design, we asked the fantastic local baker, Victoria Zoch to create the beautiful two-layered wedding cake. Not only are her cakes lovely to look at, but they are also even more delicious. This cake honored the tropical flavors of coconut for the cake & buttercream passionfruit filling, with a gorgeous blush toned vanilla fondant, creating gentle waves accenting the bottom tier. The final touch was the delicate sugar peony surrounded by some of the same dry elements used in the design.
We also wanted an impactful Escort Station. We used the amazing collection of wicker & fiber mirrors from the store Casa Bohemia, a home furniture & decor boutique, but offers its goods as wedding rentals as well. The property wall was a perfect spot to hang these, as it connects the ceremony & cocktail hour space to the reception, which is ideal considering the flow of guests when it is time to be seated. Using adhesive vinyl calligraphy, each mirror was a table number and guest names were placed on the mirrors. These were provided by the super talented, local paperie shop, The White Room. The adhesives stick right on and peel right off when it's time for clean up, which we love. They can also easily be purchased online at hundreds of shops on Etsy or even printed at home, and are a great way to create many DIY type projects, like these mirrors, to bar menus & other signage to personalize your wedding.
The White Room also created a simple yet stunning invitation suite & accessory paperie for the entire day. We asked for modern clean lines, a palette that supported the dry forest of the Guanacaste region, and above all, a look that would set the tone for this elegant bride & groom and the gorgeous modern estate where the event was taking place.
With an absolutely stunning Afro Latina Bride, and her 6’4” Groom, we wanted to express our support & belief in racial equality and the importance of media featuring more black brides & biracial couples in the wedding industry.
Despite Costa Rica being a small country, it has so much diversity across its regions, both culturally and ecologically. Our aim for this shoot was to highlight all these wonderful features of Costa Rica, using local talent and goods. Everything you need to have a wonderful wedding celebration is right here, allowing you to fully support this small little paradise and enjoying everything that it has to offer.
