There are so many elements of a wedding event that can instantly take you back to the day you said “I do.” Off the top of our heads: What you wore, what you smelled like, what you ate, who you spent the day with, etc. Everything can be a reminder, even and especially, the wedding photos. But it’s the concept of preservation — something from the day itself, being totally locked in time — that really gives us all the feels and makes us happier that it happened, rather than sad that it’s over. A floral bouquet, something perfectly curated and arranged, with carefully-chosen colors and brilliant blooms, is one of our FAVORITE preservable items in a bride’s trousseau, and it’s something that Bonnie’s Blooms has completely bested over the years. So, if you’re already starting to mourn the mere thought of your wedding flowers dying after your big day, then you’ll definitely want to game plan their second life well before you need to.
Bonnie’s Blooms started in 2018, when Bonnie (the boss behind the namesake brand) and her husband got married. They had spent thousands of dollars on their wedding flowers, and didn’t want them to be thrown in the trash after the big day. So, before they left for their honeymoon, Bonnie decided to take apart her bouquet and put the flower petals into coffee table books.
After a few weeks of the flowers drying and flattening in books, Bonnie removed and arranged the petals in a frame, flawlessly flanking her wedding invitation. The piece of art became a sentimental staple in their home and the first piece that prompted friends and family to ask if Bonnie could replicate her magic for them.
She started taking on customers and trying different pressing techniques. At one point, she was microwaving flowers to speed up the pressing process and to maximize color retention. But she ultimately learned that a traditional wood press yielded the best, most aesthetically-pleasing preserved flowers so she began building her own impressive presses. No big deal, right… #BornToBeAMaker
Bonnie’s process starts with deconstructing fresh wedding bouquets and retiring them into the capable hand’s of her handmade wood presses. The flowers are flattened and dried for approximately six weeks, at which they’re removed and organized into a unique, colossally-creative design. No preservatives or color enhancements are added during or after pressing, but the final artwork lasts years, generations, even, if displayed properly.
I’ll first say that I’ve been married for 8 years, and I failed miserably to do something with my flowers — which I LOVED and obsessed over for the entirety of my engagement, I’ll have you know — but Bonnie is amazingly-talented, and if I could do it all over again… this is precisely what I’d do.
Have flowers from your engagement party (or, maybe even pick some fresh stems at the location you plan your engagement photo session) preserved into wax seals for your wedding invitations.
I mean… it's GENIUS
Send the mini bouquets or mini floral arrangements you have at your bridal shower to Bonnie to create a gallery wall of framed art you can decorate your powder rooms or your closet with at home. Beautiful memories of your journey as a bride.
Collect all of your wedding party’s floral accoutrements (bouquets and boutonnières) after the wedding and reach out to Bonnie about having ornaments minted for all of your besties’ homes during the holidays
Happy holidays, fam — but make it haute
Whether the idea of wasting crazy amounts of money on wedding flowers only to have them thrown out or withering within days makes you cringe (like it did for Bonnie) or you just want a tangible memory of your knots tied, saved as an heirloom piece of art, you can rest easy knowing that Bonnie’s Blooms has it covered.
