While sustainability is certainly fashionable, fashion and eco-consciousness rarely go hand-in-hand. That’s why when we found out that this insanely beautiful gown by Silviyana & Community was made out of pineapple leaf fibers and recycled mulberry silk, this shoot CAPTURED our attention. As it turns out, the entire concept behind Silviyana is rooted in sustainability and ethical business practices. Each garment they create uses pineapple leaf fibers, recycled silk & cotton, and deadstock fabric.
Besides being good for the environment, this dress is good for our soul–talk about dopamine dressing! From the structured Terno sleeves inspired by the bride’s Filipino heritage to the tiered skirt and and intricate beadwork, we couldn’t take our eyes off of this radiant bride. The groom is wearing an original barong design by Silviyana that picks up all of our favorite parts of his wife’s dress. It’s also safe to say we have a new obsession, hat-veils! Rissa Shaw Studio designed and created the headpiece using faux flowers made from banana leaf fabric.
While this is technically a styled shoot. This couple are married in real life and are real Silviyana clients. Like she does with all of her clients, Seychelle (the designer and owner of Silviyana) sat down with Vanessa and Nick and got to know them each individually and then asked about their journey as a couple. She incorporated parts of their shared culture into both of the looks, like embroidered sakura flowers for Vanessa’s Japanese upbringing, and evergreen leaves from Washington where the couple lives now.
"When I started my wedding dress journey, it was so important to me to hire Filipino-inclusive designers to help me best represent my culture on my plus size body. I’m so grateful for Seychelle and the Silviyana team for creating the wedding dress of my dreams! Every unique part of the dress not only showcased my Filipino heritage but also celebrated my entire identity by also embracing my third culture upbringing in Japan in the details. From the initial consultation, they listened with so much intent and made it better from the functional pockets and the slit on the slide for a bit of drama, they made a traditional Filipino wedding dress into modern couture gown and still honored the eco-friendly and sustainable practices. I am thankful to the whole Silviyana team that they helped tell my story that is uniquely mine through my wedding gown. It was perfect.” - Vanessa Camille
For the shoot, Silviyana teamed up with Seattle-based wedding photographer, Jenny Genoroso to bring their old-meets-new vision to life. They also partnered with Filipino-American chef, Jan Parker Cookery, who creates modern dishes with flavors of the Philippines to tie back into the bride’s heritage.
Believing in the power of continual improvement, Seychelle, the lead designer and owner will be studying sustainable management practices at the University of Bath in the UK.
“I believe that fashion has the ability to reimagine possibilities, break barriers, and voice concerns in a way that is gentle, inspiring and thought-provoking. We are intentional in our growth and know that the only way forward is to create a business that allows for growth, while being mindful of the impact one has on the environment.”- Seychelle
